2024 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition Terms and Conditions

  1. 1. The promoter is Shoprite Checkers (Pty) Ltd (“the Promoter”). 
  2. 2. This promotional competition (“Competition”) is open to all South African residents who are currently residing in South Africa, who are in possession of a valid identity document, passport or other documentary proof of South African residency.
  3. 3. Participants under the age of 18 (eighteen) years (“Minors”) must be assisted and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times during the Minor’s participation in this Competition. Documentary proof of consent by the Minor’s parent or legal guardian is a requirement of both entering the Competition and receiving a prize.
  4. 4. This Competition will start on 27 May 2024 (“start date”) and end on 24 August 2024 (“closing date”). The period from the start date to closing date is referred to as the “Campaign Period”.  Any entries received after the closing date will not be considered. 
  5. 5. To enter the Competition, a participant must complete the digital entry form via the dedicated WhatsApp channel or the Checkersbr Championship Boerewors website, when they must submit an original boerewors recipe (“Recipe”) that complies with the Recipe Requirements set out below, by 21 June 2024, when entries for the Competition will close.
    Recipe requirements:
  1. a) No commercially available pre-mixed spices and/or batch packs of new or existing recipes will be allowed.

  2. b) The Recipe must make up to 3kg of boerewors.

  3. c) The Recipe submitted will not be altered in any way after it has been submitted.

  4. d) The Recipe must adhere to the standard of traditional boerewors, and contain at least 90% meat (the meat may not consist of more than 30% fat). Beef and pork, and/or lamb must be used. The remaining 10% should be comprised of spices, herbs, fluids and binding agent. Fluids are limited to Worcestershire sauce, water and vinegar. The required spices are salt, pepper and coriander. Thyme, cloves, nutmeg, origanum etc. are optional. Cereal products such as oats or breadcrumbs may be used as binding agents, but are optional, keeping in mind that the Recipe should be suitable for mass production and a specific shelf life. Recipes that include ingredients including, but not limited to, bacon, chutney, cheese, peri-peri, curry, tomato sauce, Peppadew®, green pepper, parmesan, Aromat®, chilli, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, paprika, whole peppercorns, green and/or pink peppercorns, lemon, soya, mustard, kidney fat, alcohol and venison are not allowed, will not be eligible for entry and will be disqualified. 

    6. Each participant may only enter the Competition once, and each Recipe may only be submitted once. The Promoter is entitled, in its sole discretion, to either:

    1. 6.1 Disqualify a participant who entered the Competition more than once, or accept only the participant’s first entry; or
    2. 6.2  Disqualify a Recipe that is entered more than once (even if through other participants), or accept only the first entry that submitted such Recipe.
  1. 7. The Promoter is entitled to block or disqualify any entries and disqualify anyone from winning a prize if the Promoter has a reasonable suspicion that a participant used bots, commercial contest subscription, voting software, vote swapping, automated entries, fraud or code manipulation; or that a participant used multiple email accounts or mobile numbers.
    8. The Prizes are as follows:

    1. 8.1 The Top 30 (thirty) finalists will each win a Shoprite or Checkers grocery voucher to the value of R500.00 (five hundred Rand);
    2. 8.2 The 3rd (third) place winner will win R20,000.00 (twenty thousand Rand);
    3. 8.3 The 2nd (second) place winner will win R50,000.00 (fifty thousand Rand);
    4. 8.4 The 1st (first) place “Grand Prize” winner will win:
    5. 8.4.1 R20,000.00 (fifty thousand Rand); and
    6. 8.4.2 A 2024 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 RB AT (“Vehicle”) to the value of approximately R600,000.00 (six hundred thousand Rand).
  1. 9. The voucher prizes will be sent to the winners as digital voucher codes and the cash prizes will be sent to the winners by EFT.
  1. 10. The Grand Prize winner must collect the Vehicle from a dealership of the Promoter’s choice within 2 (two) weeks of the winner announcement, otherwise the prize will be deemed forfeited in the Promoter’s sole discretion. Transport, accommodation and any other costs and fees incurred by the winner to collect the Vehicle and register it will be for the winner’s own account.
  1. 11. All features and elements of the prizes (for example, the validity period of the vouchers and the model, colour and transmission of the Vehicle) will be entirely at the Promoter’s discretion – the winner will not be entitled to choose the Vehicle or the features thereof.
  1. 12. Participants understand and agree that they may win a prize, but there is no guarantee that they will win a prize.
  1. 13. The Top 30 finalists will be selected at the discretion of culinary experts of the South African Chefs Association (“SACA”), by 12 July 2024. These Top 30 finalists will be notified telephonically or via email, when they will be required to provide and verify all requested details. The Top 30 finalists will be announced on 15 July 2024, and their R500 voucher prizes will be sent to them within 2 weeks thereafter. The Promoter (or their agent) will try to contact each Top 30 finalist once a day for 3 (three) working days after their name is drawn. Each Top 30 finalist must send a sample packet of the dried spices used in their Recipe to the Promoter according to instructions by 19 July 2024. 
  1. 14. If a finalist cannot be contacted or their details cannot be confirmed during this period, or they don’t send their spice mix to the Promoter in time, their prize and their place in the Top 30 finalist pool will be deemed forfeited and another finalist will be selected in their place. 
  1. 15. SACA will then select the Top 10 finalists from the pool of Top 30 finalists on 31 July 2024. These Top 10 finalists will be contacted telephonically or via email by 1 August 2024, when they will be required to provide and verify all requested details and confirm their availability to attend the “Finale”, where the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be selected. If a finalist cannot be contacted or their relevant details cannot be confirmed, their place in the Top 30 finalist pool will be deemed forfeited and another Top 10 finalist will be selected in their place. 
  1. 16. The Top 10 finalists will be announced on 1 August 2024.
  1. 17. Transport for the Top 10 finalists to and from the Finale at a location in the Western Cape and accommodation for the Top 10 finalists will be provided by the Promoter. All elements of the travel arrangements and accommodation will be at the Promoter’s sole discretion. Any other related costs not specified in these terms and conditions (for example spending money) will be for each finalists’ own account.
    18. The Top 10 finalists must:

    1. 18.1 Send a sample packet of the dried spices used in their Recipe to the Promoter according to instructions by a date to be confirmed by the Promoter.
    2. 18.2 Mix and prepare 3kg of boerewors according to their Recipe at a location designated by the Promoter on 22 August 2024. At this point the recipe will be compared to each finalist’s ORIGINAL VERIFIED recipe and any discrepancy will result in immediate disqualification. 
    3. 18.3 Attend the Finale event on 24 August 2024. The finalists must bring their prepared boerewors and a sample of their dried spices to the Finale, where the boerewors will be cooked on a braai. The 3rd, 2nd and 1st place winners will be selected and announced by a SACA panel of judges. A Top 10 finalist who does not attend the Finale, will be disqualified from the Competition and will not be considered for winning the 3rd, 2nd or 1st place prize.
    19. By entering this Competition, participants:

    1. 19.1 Confirm that they will not alter their Recipe in any way during the Campaign Period, after it was submitted during entry;
    2. 19.2 Must make themselves available to attend the Finale, if they are selected as a Top 10 finalist;
    3. 19.3 Consent to the processing of their personal information by the Promoter and its service providers, insofar that it is necessary to give effect to the Competition, for example to view the entries, select and announce the winners publicly and arrange handover of the prizes. Winners will be given the opportunity to consent or object to further processing of their personal information by contacting the Promoter;
    4. 19.4 Waive their moral rights and grant the Promoter exclusive, unlimited, perpetual and free of charge copyright and usage (in any territory where these entities trade), in all media forms of all material, text and intellectual property created and/or published/posted by the participants in the submission of their competition entry. The Promoter will be entitled to use and edit the intellectual property in any manner and in its sole discretion, for an indefinite period of time and in any territory where it trades. Participants will not during or after the closing date of the Competition dispute or question such copyright and usage;
    5. 19.5 Warrant to the Promoter that they are entitled to assign all intellectual property in the Recipe to the Promoter;
    6. 19.6 Where applicable, waive any right to demand royalties, usage fees or any other form of compensation or payment for the use of intellectual property in the participant’s entry; and
    7. 19.7 Consent that their names be announced publicly by the Promoter on any platform that they deem fit.
    20. In addition to the above, should a participant be selected as a winner, and as a condition to receive a prize, the winners:

    1. 20.1 Warrant that their Recipe adheres to all competition rules, guidelines and standards as stipulated on www.championshipboerewors.co.za
    2. 20.2 Agree that, in the event that they win the Grand Prize, they will make their Recipe available to the Promoter in order to be mass-produced, marketed and used in the Promoter’s supermarkets, and the Recipe will become the property of the Promoter. The Promoter is entitled to amend the Recipe in any way that it deems fit.
    3. 20.3 Cede and assign to the Promoter all of the winners’ rights, title and interests in the Recipe, and waive their moral rights in their Recipes.
    4. 20.4 Will, if the Recipe was formulated by someone other than the winner, the winner will provide the Promoter with written consent of the original recipe developer.
    5. 20.5 Will not share the Recipe or any information relating to it with anyone other than the Promoter, or use the Recipe to compete with the Promoter in any way. If the Grand Prize winner is a butcher, they may continue to use the Recipe in their butchery, but only under his/her own trademark and may not make any reference to the Promoter, its brands, this Competition or their association thereto. 
    6. 20.6 Will not use the other party’s name or trademarks (including the names or trademarks of the other party’s affiliates or products) in any form of publicity.
    7. 20.7 Will confirm and sign these terms and conditions in writing in the format requested by the Promoter.
    8. 20.8 Will provide all relevant information requested by the Promoter’s representatives, including but not limited to the winners’ full names, ID numbers, contact details, banking details, delivery address and driver’s licenses.
  1. 21. Prizes will only be awarded after verification is successfully completed by the Promoter or its representatives. Failing successful verification, the winner will be disqualified and a substitute winner may be selected at the discretion of the Promoter.
  1. 22. he winners will be announced on the Promoter’s digital platforms.
  1. 23. Neither the Promoter nor its agents or suppliers will be liable for the failure of any technical element relating to this Competition that may result in an entry not being successfully submitted, or for vouchers or entries that are lost, damaged or delayed. Voucher codes will not be resent and no replacement voucher codes will be issued.
  1. 24. The winners will not be entitled to payment, credit or otherwise in the event that they do not receive or utilise the prize to the fullest extent possible. Any item or value unused will be deemed waived by the winners.
  1. 25. The Promoter in its sole discretion is entitled to disqualify any winner who at any time does not act in accordance with the spirit of the Competition.
  1. 26. No applications from agents, third parties, organised groups or applications automatically generated by computer will be accepted. No incomplete or corrupted entries will be accepted. Entries will only be accepted if they comply with all entry instructions.
  1. 27. Prizes are not transferable and may not be deferred or exchanged for cash, credit or otherwise.
  1. 28. The Promoter is entitled to change or terminate the Competition and/or prizes immediately and without notice, if deemed necessary in its sole discretion. In the event of such change or termination, participants agree to waive any rights that they have in respect of this Competition and acknowledge that they will have no recourse against the Promoter, its suppliers or agents. 
  1. 29.In the event that the prize is not available despite the Promoter’s reasonable endeavours to procure the prize, the Promoter reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal value. 
  1. 30. Neither the Promoter, its agents, service providers, suppliers, associated companies, nor any directors, officers or employees of such, shall be liable for any loss or damage, whether direct, indirect, consequential or otherwise arising from any cause whatsoever, which may be suffered by the participant. 
  1. 31. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. 
  1. 32. Participation in this Competition constitutes acceptance of, and an agreement to comply with these terms and conditions. 
  1. 33. The winners may be requested to endorse, promote and advertise any of the goods and services of the Promoter and will not unreasonably withhold their consent.
  1. 34. Protecting participants’ personal information is important to the Promoter. For more information, please refer to the data privacy statement on their website.
  1. 35. This Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with any social media channel and the participants acknowledge that they are providing information to the Promoter and its agents only and not to any social media channel.
