Provincial Rounds 2009

The 87 Regional winners will compete in ten Provincial Rounds on 19 September 2009. One provincial round will be held per province, except for Gauteng which will host 2 provincial events:

  • KwaZulu-Natal - Checkers Bluff (Durban)
    In KwaZulu-Natal 10 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Bluff, Tara Road, Bluff in Durban. The event starts at 9h00. Visitors will be entertained by Tony Schroeder, who will also be the MC for the day. Other entertainment include performances drum majorettes, unicyclists, stilt walkers, Celtic Dancers and High Energy Dancers. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products. Members of the public will be able to take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, whilst carousel swings, face-painting, clowns, jumping castles, the Oros Man, Simba the Lion and a dog show will keep the kids entertained.
    The KwaZulu-Natal provincial round competitors are: Vikash Bachu from Ladysmith, Bernadette Jordaan from Newcastle, Siyabonga Ndlovu from Howick, George Ferns from Shelley Beach, Isaac Hlatswayo from Empangeni, Bennie Nothnagel from Hillcrest, Niven Madhanlall from Shallcross, Bongani Xolofrom Empangeni, and Denesh Devpruth and Nishal Purai both from Durban.

  • Free State - Checkers Hyper Bloemfontein
    In the Free State 6 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Hyper Bloemfontein, Vereeniging Drive. The event starts at 9h00. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by well-known musician, Christelle Fouche, who will also be the MC for the day. Other entertainment include performances by local musician Zandre van der Huyst and and games such as chilli dog eating and coke drinking contests. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products. Members of the public will be able to take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, whilst baloon-filled playpens, Simba the Lion and a giant slide will keep the little ones entertained.
    The Free State provincial round competitors are:
    Corrie van Heerden, Winddie Nompumelelo Sila, and Juan Harker who all hail from Bloemfontein, Rudie Snyder from Harrismith, Jan Labuschange from Allanridge, and Frances Pelser from Kroonstad.

  • Northern Cape - Checkers Kimberley
    In the Northern Cape 5 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Kimberley, cnr Bultfontein and Sydney Eden streets. The event starts at 9h00. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by the MC for the day, Manie Kitching, as well as well-known singer, Melissa le Grange. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products. Members of the public will be able to take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, whilst jumping castles and other fun activities will keep the little ones entertained.
    The Northern Cape provincial round competitors are: Elizabeth Lesley - two-time national Championship Boerewors finalist (2007 & 2008) - from Kuruman, Nickie Kuhn from Upington, Adriaan Venter from Springbok, Laeticia Geldenhuys from Petrusville, and Hendrik du Plessis from Modderrivier.

  • Western Cape - Checkers Cobblewalk (Durbanville)
    In the Western Cape 19 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Cobble Walk, Cobble Walk Shopping Centre, Sonstraal Heights in Durbanville. The event starts at 10h00. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by 2009 SA Idol, Sasha-Lee Davids. The event promises to be full of fun and excitement for young and old with various lucky draws and giveaways to be held throughout the course of the event. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition will also offer promotional activities and competitions.
    The Western Cape provincial round competitors are: Mannetjies de Villiers from Somerset West, Willem Engelbrecht from Brackenfell, Sophia Bougaard and Joseline Hendricks both from Paarl, Estelle Moller from Oudtshoorn, Kevin Holloway from Atlantis, Daniel Andrews from Kuils River, Eugene Cupido from Strand, Denver Fortuin from Mamre, Mogamat Yusuf Abrahams from Manenberg, Catherine Groeners from Plettenberg Bay, Deon Stassen from Beaufort West, Agren Bullock from Eerste River, Peter Allsop from Kraaifontein, Dawie Grobler from Vredenburg, Craig Wessels from Grassy Park, Wilfred Oliphant from Blue Downs, and Danny Engelbrecht from Hout Bay.

  • Eastern Cape - Shoprite Bethelsdorp, PE
    In the Eastern Cape 8 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Shoprite Bethelsdorp, Cnr Norman Middleton and Stanford Roads, Port Elizabeth. The event starts at 9h30. Visitors will be entertained by well-known local, Bebe, who will also be MC for the day, and live band Touch. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products. Members of the public will be able to take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, whilst jumping castles, face painting, Simba the Lion and Benino the Magician will keep the little ones busy.
    The Eastern Cape provincial round competitors are:
    John Miller – a 2007 Championship Boerewors top ten finalist – from Port Elizabeth, Pierre Bylsma from Port Elizabeth, Neville Krause from East London, Andrew Mackay from Mthatha, Kathryn Saaiman from Grahamstown, Eric Middlecamp from Graaff-Reinet, Gcobani Nomwebu from Port Elizabeth, and Robin banks from Jeffreys Bay.

  • Gauteng 1 - Checkers Hyper Edenvale
    Edenvale will host its provincial round for 11 competitors at Checkers Hyper Edenvale, Brickfield Road, Germiston.Visitors will be entertained by popular singer JJ Stephens, who will also be MC for the day, and a music festival with performances by Vonk artists. Simba the Lion will keep the kids busy with lots of fun activties.
    The Edenvale provincial round competitors are: Lappies Labuschagne from Witfield, Grace Nkuna from Mabopane, George Baloyi from Soshanguve, Jackes Wiese from Kempton Park, Charles Hamilton from Moreleta Park, Bheki Ndlangamandla from Mamelodi West, Ruan Schutte and Natasha van der Merwe both from Roodepoort, Karla Steenkamp from Bryanston, Markus Stander from Germiston, and Ivan Gillson from Pretoria.

  • Gauteng 2 - Shoprite Brakpan
    In Brakpan 10 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Shoprite Brakpan. Visitors will be entertained by Adriaan Van Der Merwe, who will also be MC for the day, Jason Bradley and Mirka. Other entertainment include performances by Madam Adda , Little Jerry and Olie the Clown.
    The Brakpan provincial round competitors are: Fred Beck from Brakpan, Eugene Janse van Rensburg from Randfontein, Wilson Thwala and Sophie Mulaudzi both from Soweto, Lolita Lesley from Pretoria West, Johan Botha from Vereeniging, Wesley Durieux from Johannesburg, Gerrie Gouws from Vanderbijlpark, Donovan Hoker from Ennerdale, and Henry Thusi from Pretoria.

  • Limpopo - Checkers Polokwane
    In Limpopo 5 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Polokwane, Cnr Grobler and Hans van Rensburg Streets. The event starts at 9h00. Visitors will be entertained by former radio presenter, Kevin Burden, who will also be the MC for the day. Other entertainment includes performances by Vonk artists, Carlo and Yvette. The event promises to be full of fun and excitement for young and old with various lucky draws and giveaways to be held throughout the course of the event. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition will also offer promotional activities and competitions
    The Limpopo provincial round competitors are: Christine le Roux from Nylstroom, Alpheus Rameetse from Polokwane, Koos van Dyk from Polokwane, and Elias Nkosi and Kobus Nel both from Louis Trichardt.


  • North West Province - Shoprite Brits
    In the North West Province 6 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Shoprite Brits, Cnr of Pienaar and De Wits Streets. The event starts at 9h00. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by well-known musicians, Jeffrey de Bruin and Natalie Green. The event promises to be full of fun and excitement for young and old with various lucky draws and giveaways to be held throughout the course of the event. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition will also offer promotional activities and competitions
    The North West provincial round competitors are: George Hendriks from Taung, Ruan van Jaarsveld and Annemie van Staden both from Rustenburg, Frans Cronje from Lichtenburg, Annetjie Fourie from Brits, and Frederick Reyneke from Potchefstroom.

  • Mpumlanga - Shoprite Nelspruit
    In Mpumalanga 7 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Shoprite Nelspruit, Sanlam Centre, Louis Trichardt Street. The event starts at 9h00. Between the sizzling fires and fragrant aromas of boerewors, visitors will be entertained by well-known musician, Nico Booijse, who will also be the MC for the day. The event promises to be full of fun and excitement for young and old with various lucky draws and giveaways to be held throughout the course of the event. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition will also offer promotional activities and competitions.
    The Mpumalanga provincial round competitors are: Attie Kuhn – a top ten finalist in the 2008 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition – from Delmas, Bheki Simelane from Barberton, Paul Kohler from Bronkhorstspruit, Francois Nel and Victor Lourens both from Nelspruit, Mabeljia Botha from Witbank, and Mark Engelbrecht from Belfast.
