THE 2017 CHAMPIONSHIP BOEREWORS COMPETITION

Are you South African? Then there's no doubt you're a boerewors fanatic! That's why Shoprite and Checkers have for the past 25 years hosted the search for #SAsNo1 Championship Boerewors.

Anyone with an exceptional traditional boerewors recipe can enter & through the years the title of Boerewors Champion has been conquered by South Africans from all walks of life, from housewives to butchery managers, and even by a (then) 13-year-old primary school learner!

The South African Chefs Association (SACA), a recognized authority on food in South Africa, will once again take charge of the judging processes, making sure that all entries adhere to strict guidelines.

The 2017 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will receive SACA's Seal of Approval, guaranteeing that the ingredients for South Africa's best loved boerewors are of the highest quality.

STEP 1: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A TRADITIONAL BOEREWORS RECIPE

You must enter your own special boerewors recipe that contains your own unique combination of spices.

PLEASE NOTE: No commercially available pre-mixed spices and/or batch packs of new or existing recipes will be allowed. This recipe must comply with traditional boerewors recipe guidelines.


STEP 2: KNOW HOW TO PREPARE YOUR TRADITIONAL BOEREWORS

You must know how to prepare boerewors by grinding the meat, adding your mix of herbs and spices, and finally stuffing the mixture into the casing. To ensure fair judging, entrants must use a thick (28/32 calibre) casing. For technical assistance with spices or casings please contact one of the following companies:

    STEP 3: COMPLETE AN ENTRY FORM

    Ensure that you have filled in all the entry fields, including all your personal details and the fields on the meat, liquid and spice components, and that you have signed the entry form. Please remember to include your special boerewors recipe method.

    NOTE: All entry forms must be accompanied by a copy of your identity.


    STEP 4: ENTER YOUR RECIPE

    The 2017 Championship Boerewors Competition entries open on Monday, 24 April 2017. Submit your completed entry form (with a copy of your ID) to reach us by the closing date Friday, 2 June 2017, in any of the following ways:

    STEP 5: GET READY FOR JUDGING

    Your entry form will go through a validation process to ensure that your boerewors recipe complies with the specifications and requirements of the South African Chefs Association. Every entrant will be contacted telephonically to verify all the details supplied and to be informed of the judging process and future proceedings once their recipe has been validated. All telephone calls will be recorded to ensure absolute accuracy. This is the start of the judging process.

    - COMPETITION STAGES -


    CHAMPION ROUNDS

    Held nationwide on SATURDAYS, 1 AND 8 JULY 2017 in main city centres. All entrants that submitted VALID boerewors recipes before the closing date of the competition will be allowed to compete. The Top Three (3) winners from each Champion Round will proceed to the Top 18 Round.

    THE TOP 18 ROUND
    Takes place on SATURDAY, 22 JULY 2017 in Cape Town where the final Top 3 recipes will be chosen by a panel of expert judges.

    THE NATION DECIDES!
    The overall winner will be chosen from the Top 3 recipes through a VOTING process. Between FRIDAY, 18 AUGUST AND FRIDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER 2017, all South Africans will be able to buy, braai and try the Top 3 recipes and then VOTE for their favourite to become SA’s No.1.

    THE NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BOEREWORS
    The WINNING 2017 Championship Boerewors will be announced on 13 SEPTEMBER 2017 and the WINNING RECIPE will be available in all Shoprite and Checkers stores on FRIDAY, 15 SEPTEMBER 2017.
